If we know little about Bosch's life, we know even less about his artistic background. It is generally assumed that he was trained by his father or one of his uncles, but all their paintings have been lost. Numerous paintings bearing Bosch's name can be found in museums and private collections throughout Europe and the United States. Many of these pictures are only copies of his original compositions, however, a small group of drawings can be attributed to him with reasonable certainty.
